One day I've found GKB unusable and decided to replace it (using the same pixmaps from /usr/share/pixmaps/gkb). La voila...

Features:
- Switching flag/tooltip depending on current Xkb group locked
- Customizing flag icon
- Autoscaling flag icon
- Manual switching from menu and by dbl-click
- Enabling/disabling beep on layout switching
- Switching to some ("secondary") layouts using applet menu only (disabling kb switching)
