ทำไมถึงต้องอ่าน Linux ว่า "ลีนุกซ์"
ในประเทศไทยมีคนเรียกชื่อ Linux หลายอย่างบางคนเรียก "ลีนุกซ์" บางคนเรียก "ไลนักซ์" บางคนเรียก "ไลนุกซ์" บางคนเรียก "ลีนักซ์" และมีเรียกกันแบบอื่นๆอีกมาก แต่ที่นิยมกันจะมีอยู่สองแบบคือ "ลีนุกซ์" กับ "ไลนักซ์" เท่านั้นเอง
ตอนผมเจอครั้งแรกผมเรียกว่า "ลีนุกซ์" และมาได้ยิน audio ที่คุณ Linus เขาอ่านด้วยตนเอง ถ้าต้องการฟังเสียงของคุณ Linus ลองดาวน์โหลดไฟล์ audio จาก english.au
และ swedish.au ผมคิดว่าเขาอ่านว่า "ลีนุกซ์" หรือ "ลีนึกซ์" ใกล้ๆกันนี่แหละครับ แต่เพื่อความแน่นอน ผมได้ส่งเมลล์เข้าไปที่นิวส์กรุป comp.os.linux.misc เข้าไปถามว่าเขาอ่านกันอย่างไรแน่
ผมได้รับจดหมายตอบจากนิวส์กรุปมาเยอะ บางคนถึงกับส่งไฟล์ audio ที่คุณ Linus อ่านมาให้เลยทีเดียว (ขอบคุณครับ) มีอ่านกันหลายแบบเหมือนกับบ้านเรา แต่ที่น่าสนใจ คือ 2 ฉบับนี้ครับ

For the benefit of those of you who don't have the equipment or inclination:
Linus pronounces Linux approximately as Leenus, where the ee is as in feet but
rather
shorter and the u is like a much shorter version of the French eu sound in peur
(pronouncing it as the u in put is probably passable).
When speaking English I pronounce it Lie-nucks (u as in bucket) --- this is an
anglicised pronunciation based on the analogy with Linus' name, which in
English is usually pronounced Lie-nus (u as in put). It is of course quite acceptable and
common to modify the pronunciation of a proper noun when it changes languages.
I think I can safely say that the pronunciation Linnucks (short i as in pit,
short u as in bucket) is wrong in English, as it is not the original Swedish
pronunciation, not a sensible direct anglicisation of it, and not based on
the anglicised version of Linus' name.
ฉบับนี้ลอกข้อความจาก FAQ มาให้ซึ่งจะอ่านใกล้เคียงกับคำว่า "ไลนักซ์" และบอกว่าการอ่านว่า "ลีนุกซ์" นั้นผิดกฏของการอ่านแบบอังกฤษ (anglicisation) และไม่เป็นไปตามแบบ Swedish (มีข่าวบางแหล่งแจ้งว่า Linus เป็นคนสวีเดนโดยกำเนิดครับ)
อีกฉบับมาจากเยอรมัน คนเยอรมันก็ใช้ลีนุกซ์กันเยอะเหมือนกันครับ ฉบับนี้จะอ่านแบบ

FYI, some linguistic background on Europe: There are, with just a few
exceptions, as many languages spoken in Europe as there are countries.
Finnish bears no resemblance to any other European language and very
remotely sounds like Hungarian, but that is about all. Two varieties of
Dutch are spoken in Luxemburg and the northern part of Belgium. French is
also spoken in the southern part of Belgium, in parts of Switzerland, in
Monaco and on Corsica. German is also spoken in Austria and parts of
Switzerland. Italian is also spoken in San Marino and parts of Switzerland.
English is also spoken in Eireland. They share a common language (Serbo-
Croatic) in the countries which once formed Yugoslavia, but are falling back
to their own languages.
All other countries, if I haven't forgotten one, speak a language,
which isn't spoken in another European country. Some even use different
alphabets (Russia, Belorussia, Ukraina, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece).
As to 'Finland being near Holland', the distance between these two
countries is well over 1200km at the nearest point, and Germany, Denmark
and Sweden lie in between. Ah, yes, on the Aaland-Isles in the Baltic
Sea, they speak both Swedish and Finnish.
Apart from that, Linux, Finnish being a phonetic language, in contrast to
English, which isn't, is pronounced 'lee-nooks' as in 'free' and 'should'
